Fondi
The city of Giulia Gonzaga
Fondi’s urban core is located in the south of Agro Pontino halfway between Rome and Naples. The homonymous flat land at the foot of the Aurunci and Ausoni mountains, which close it on three sides, and is open south to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The surrounding reliefs, culminating in the Monte delle Fate (1090 m) and Monte Calvilli (1102 m), feed the water slopes of the plain, which is rich in water, as evidenced by the presence of over twenty springs and three lakes. This abundance of water has made it necessary in the centuries of great remediation works that began in the seventeenth century and ended only in the first half of the twentieth century, to gradually transform the marshland into a fertile agricultural area.
